Salon du Cheval 2004
by Liz Salmon

The annual World Championships at the Salon du Cheval in Paris were held on December third to the fifth 2004. This year twenty countries took part, and in my opinion the standard was higher than ever. Among the many newcomers to watch the show were several Americans including Scott Bailey. They all seemed very impressed by the whole atmosphere, the wonderful array of horses in all the classes and meeting so many people from all over the world.

The seven judges also came from all corners of the world. They were Doug Dahmen (USA), Titti Gagliani (Italy), Walter Koch (Germany), Joanna Lowe (UK), Nasr Marei (Egypt), Richard Pilstrom (France) and Christina Wale (Sweden). Five judges adjudicate at one time, and rotate their duties. Five or six horses are selected in each section to go forward to the final.

On the first day, the first two sections of fillies aged from one to three years was wonderful. The hot favourite was the Polish owned and bred fabulous yearling filly Pianissima (Gazal Al Shaqab x Pianosa), already the European and All Nation Cup Champion, and she didn't disappoint her fans, as she won Section A with a very high score of 469. She also won the most classic head award. Coming in second with 450 was the pretty exotic headed Frasera Mashara (Shahil x MB Madora) for Italy.

Winning Section B was another outstanding filly -the three year old Sundos Al Nasser (Ashal Al Rayyan x MS Elvira) who scored 465 for Qatar. In second place was the 2004 British National Junior Female Champion-the very attractive, eye catching Haniyyah (Psytadel x Hanina) for the UK.

Following the fillies was a feast for the eyes, as the two sections of mares came under the judges scrutiny. Winning the first section with a very high score of 470 was the gorgeous Polish bred El Dorada (Sanadik El Shaklan x Emigrantka) with an already great show record. Closely second in this great class was the beautiful Straight Egyptian Loubna (Imperial Imdal x Imperial Kalatifa) who also has it all to be a great show mare, and who scored 466.5 for Israel.

The second section which was much smaller due to a number of scratched entries was won by the great moving Polish bred chestnut Fallada (Monogramm x Fanaberia) with 462 points. Closely second with 460.5 was her Michalow stable mate Palmira (Monogramm x Palestra)-a favourite of mine as she looks to be not only very typey with great movement, but would also be a wonderful riding horse. WN Fawn Obsession (Padrons Psyche x WN Obsession) deservedly won the most classic head award for Saudi Arabia.

The following day was the 'boys' turn. Some really promising colts came forward, with the first section being won by a lovely British entry-LVA Maximus (Espano Estopa x Challon Salana), scoring 458, very reminiscent of his illustrious grandsire Carmargue. In second place with 455 was the aptly named Argentinian bred and UAE owned JJ Carismatico (JJ Senior Magnum x Leenue NA) -another lovely colt with great stallion potential.

A score of 457 won the very typey and well conformed Nijem Ibn Eternity (Eternity Ibn Navaronne x Naravna) the second section for Sweden. A close score of 56.5 put El Amin (Psytadel x RA Cool Elygance) an attractive colt with very good movement in second place for Belgium. The most classic head award went to Ajman Moniscione ( WH Justice x Anthea Moniscione) for Italy.

The stallions always draw a big and enthusiastic crowd-this year was no exception. Eternity Ibn Navaronne (Ansata Sinan x Navaronne P) the stunningly beautiful and typey sire of the section B winning colt, scored a high 467 to win the first section for Belgium. He was a very hot favourite having been this years All Nations Cup Champion. The US bred WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea) with a beautiful head that also won him the most classic head award, came into second place with a score of 462 for Italy.

Equally impressive was the section second of stallions with some wonderful movers. Here the typey, good moving Dutch owned Pesal (Partner x Perforacja) scored 466 to win the class. Coming in a close second with 464 was the crowd favourite the Straight Egyptian Imperial Imdal (PVA Karim x BB Ora Kalilah) for the USA. A lovely horse with a great temperament already competing in advanced dressage. I just have to mention the British exhibit Vodolej (Mashuk x Mechta) who at 21 years old brought the house down with his incredible movement and presence. He also made it into the top ten.

The third day was devoted to all four Championships. Here all seven judges judge the horses on a comparative system, so each horse in the finals has a chance to show better movement and presence. First in were the fillies, with a unanimous Champion Pianissima winning the title with Sundos Al Nasser in Reserve.

The Mare Championship caused a big stir, as the initial Champion was announced as Loubna with El Dorada in Reserve. Then they announced a mistake and switched the horses, only to announce that the first result was correct. Not very fair on the owners, but at least they got it right in the end.

The colt Champion was Nijem Ibn Eternity with LVA Maximus in Reserve. The Stallion Championship as usual created tremendous applause and cheering for the big movers. However, the Champion Eternity Ibn Navaronne emerged as the deserving winner with Imperial Baarez in Reserve.

The consensus of opinion from the newcomer spectators was that this show has to be an annual date on their calendar. It's certainly a great opportunity to see some of the best Arabian horses in the world, and to meet their famous breeders. I have been going since 1992 and I wouldn't miss it for the world. I hope more people will join me next year.
