2005 The British Nationals
By Liz Salmon
Well, what can be said
about the 2005 show-WET
!! However, the good side
was that the entries were
up, over 70 yearling fillies
entered, and the standard
was high on the whole.
Safe from the elements
inside the sponsors tent,
I had a very good view
of the Purebred in Hand
classes.
The judges were Marlyn
Pollard (fillies), Annette
Hedley (colts), Sylvie
Eberhardt (mares), Marianne
Tengstedt (stallions),
and Peter Whitlow (geldings
and foals).
As usual the colts came forward
on the first day, with drizzle
dampening some of the presence
normally seen, but most managed
to show off in style. The
first class of yearlings
born on or after 10th May
was small and fairly average
in content, but there was
nothing average about the
winner. Thundaa, a son of
the multi Champion Psynergy,
out of Winttaa, was a gorgeous,
leggy colt with tons of type,
presence and free movement.
He was bred and owned by
Albert Cozens.
The intermediate colts
born between 1st April
and 9th May was a much
larger class with some
great moving entries. Once
again a son of Psynergy
came to the top. This time
it was Psynerman out of
Mustique-a good bodied
colt with plenty of type
and lovely big eyes. He
was bred by Mr. & Mrs.
Whittard and is owned by
Mr. Tonge & Colin Mackenzie.
I thought that the Senior
class of colts born before
March 1st was the best
of the three classes, but
then they also have an
edge on maturity. Taking
the class was the very
typey, refined and good
moving colt Audemars PA
(Kais 1 x Asali) bred by
Jackie Ware and owned by
Miss Bethall. The best
yearling colt award went
to Psynerman.
I thought that the two
year old colt class was
full of potential stallion
material. Standing out
was the big international
winner Master Design GA
(Versace x BEA Society
Belle). This colt has everything-type,
good conformation, movement
and presence. He swept
all before him taking the
Junior Male Championship
as well. He was bred by
M. Bentley and is owned
by Rhodri Jones. Coming
in a very close second
was last years wonderful
Junior Male Champion SG
Spirit of Esteem (Esteem
x Malikeh Sakeena) who
has grown on very well
indeed, and showing how
strong this class was,
he was Reserve Junior Champion
for proud owner/breeder
Susan George. It's always
very satisfying to breed
a colt of this quality.
The class for three year
old colts was also an excellent
one. Taking the winners
place was the flashy bay
Final Shadow (BE) (Psytadel
x AS Shahwan). Here was
another colt with super
type, movement and presence.
He was bred by J. Swaenepoel
and is owned by Mr. Atkin.
The Junior gelding classes
also took place on the
first day. The class for
yearlings only had three
entries and was won by
the beautiful typey Zanzibar
PA (Psytadel x Zanetta)
bred by Jackie Ware and
owned by Andrea Ware. The
two year old class was
quite a good one. Psyclone
(Psychedelic x G Menelonia)
was the winner- a well
built good moving horse
with great riding potential,
bred by Mr. Evans and owned
by Mrs. Robinson. Again
the three years old contained
some great looking potential
riding horses. Winning
this one was the very attractive,
strong bodied Indian Golden
King (Azina El Shaklan
x Indian Phoenix) bred
by Mrs. Nunn and owned
by Ms Crookall. The Junior
gelding Champion was Zanzibar
with Indian Golden King
in Reserve.
Sadly there was only one
group forward for the Sire
Produce Group, which at
least was an outstanding
one, which was the group
by Psynergy (Padrons Psyche
x Balanina) bred by Hans
Trummer and owned by Emrys
and Sue Jones. Psynergy
also won the title of leading
sire of the show with Esteem
in Reserve.
The futurity class for
colts was very small and
won by the Esteem son Fantasist
out of G Fantastica, bred
by Mr. & Mrs. Bundy
and owned by P. Wainwright.
The Futurity gelding winner
another Esteem son Estisha
out of Nimisha owned and
bred by Mr. J and Mrs.
P Howell.
The next day, the weather
had slightly improved with
only a little rain, but
it was still very overcast
and threatening. This day
heralded the start of the
huge filly classes, although
a good many entered did
not come forward. The first
class for yearlings born
on or after 28th May was
a fairly nice class, with
the top five or so being
of high quality. Standing
at the top was the Dutch
bred entry Lowinia F (NL)
(Almonito (NL) x La-Belle
AVS) an attractive great
moving filly, bred by A
Kuijf Nieuwkoop and owned
by Miss Smith.
The next class for entries
born between 22nd April
and 27th May was a much
better class on the whole
with some beautiful entries.
Winning this one was Psyonara
(Psynergy (AT) x Fajala)-a
very flashy, typey and
good moving filly bred
by Mrs. Maes Jones and
owned by Mrs. Le'vell.
The next class was a very
tough one indeed to judge-fabulous
fillies. This was for those
born between 20th March
and 21st April. A great
win here in this competition
for Psyannah (Psynergy
(AT) x Yannah (NL) ) a
filly with all that it
takes-type, movement and
presence, she had a lovely
topline too. Bred and owned
by Emrys and Sue Jones.
The Senior fillies born
before 19th March was another
good one. Psynergy sired
another winner here-Mirage
Psyndicate out of HS Mimosa.
Owned and bred by Sally
Roberts, she too was very
worthy of her win. The
Best Yearling title went
to the bay yearling Lowinia
F.
The class for two year
old fillies, I thought
was a fairly average class,
but certainly not the winner.
This was the Dutch bred
Yokosuka (NL) (Elton (NL)
x Yarra (NL) ) a compact,
typey filly with a good
body and topline, bred
by A. Kuijf Nieuwkoop and
owned by Mr. & Mrs.
D. Smith. The Senior two
year old class was stunning.
A feast for the eyes !!
Winning this one with her
wonderful presence was
the very typey, great moving
Kyla Jean (US) (Affirme
x WA Psyches Charm) bred
by Jess & Janet Lewis
Blane and owned by Andrea
Ware. She was Best Two
Year old with Yokosuka
Reserve.
The first of the three year
old classes was again a lovely
class with little tail end.
It was won by the grey, very
typey and ethereal South
African bred filly Johrhemar
Nagwa (Johrhemar El Gazell
x Johrhemar Munifa). She
had great movement and presence
and was bred by Johann and
Marie-Louise van Wyk and
owned by Peter Gamlin, C.
Ratcliffe and V. Mathews.
The second class for three
year was not such an impressive
class, but was won by the
typey and smooth bodied MA
Itsakindofmagic (FS Bengali
x Sambanja) bred by Mike
Ashmore and owned by SA Terry.
The Best Three Year Old was
won by Johrhemar Nagwa with
Tahama Ballalina (Tehm Na
Sidaqa x JJ Shai Majestic
Queen) in Reserve.
The Futurity filly class
was a good one won by the
lovely SG Boranya (Borneo
x Luzhana) owned and bred
by Susan George.
The mares without foals
and the Senior geldings
were on at the same time,
which meant I was dashing
from one ring to the other.
The class for Junior geldings
four years and over was
a lovely class of great
riding horses and was won
by the splendid grey NPA
Hazan (Shaikh Al Kuran
x Havannah) owned and bred
by Mr. & Mrs. P. Armstrong,
He had a lovely front and
great legs. The Senior
class was again a fabulous
class of super movers,
won by Erros (Mezalians
x Emi)-a lovely upright
horse with a well shaped
neck and good movement.
He was bred Elizabeth Chat
and owned by Mrs. S. Russell.
He also won the Best gelding
award and went onto be
Champion Senior Gelding
with another good horse
HT Ala Shan (Azal x Winja
al D'Ama) in Reserve bred
by Mr.& Mrs. Woodward
and owned by Miss A. Mitchell.
The first class of mares
without foals aged 4 to
6 years was a nice class
of typey movers. Sylvie
Eberhardt was quick and
decisive in her choices.
Here she put the dynamic
bay US import Love By Design
GA (Versace x HL Infatuation)
as her winner. This mare
has type, good body conformation
as well as superb movement
and presence. She was bred
by W & B Bentley and
owned by M & S Foreman.
The next class of mares
aged 7 to 10 years was
also a good class. Here
the lovely, ethereal, great
bodied and super moving
Yazmeena Estopa (Om El
Azadik x Om El Shiva Estopa)
prevailed for her owner/breeders
Mr. & Mrs. Dean Ingham.
The another mares aged
11 to 16 was another good
class, with all greys except
one. Coming out on top
was one of my personal
favourites, as I've seen
many of her relatives in
Australia. This was Windella
Silver Sensation (SK Shakla
Khan x Windella Silver
Fascination)-a lovely ethereal
mare with great type and
movement. She was bred
by Peter & Vivien Hall & S.
Stump and is owned by Heather
Brown.
The Veteran class for
mares aged 17 to 20 was
a small class won by that
great winning mare Sasza
(Fawor x Saszetka) looking
great. She was bred by
Janow Podlaski State Stud
and owned by Rebecca McCormick.
The winner of the class
for the 21 year olds and
over was Alina (Procyon
x Shimmering Psalm) bred
by Mrs. C Jenkins and owned
by Mr. & Mrs. L Jenkins.
The last class of the day
was the Princess Muna Family
groups won by the group
out of Marih Lela by Nazdrowie
bred by Wendy Carr and
owned by Heather Brown.
The third day of the show
the weather worsened. Pouring
rain on and off-such a
shame as Arabs don't show
their tail carriage nearly
as well and are afraid
of slipping. First in were
the classes for mares with
foals at foot. The first
class was for mares of
4 to 8 years. Although
21 were entered only 11
came forward, but it was
a good class of typey movers.
The winner had everything-type,
good conformation movement
and presence, she was Noura
(DE) (Kubinec x Bint Moufisa)
bred by Michael Ponnath
and owned by Mrs. S Madgewick.
I found the next class
for mares 9 to 16 years
a little disappointing,
however the winning mare
was lovely, this was Focus
Galliana (Padrons Psyche
x Focus Alianna). A big,
typey, scopey mare she
was bred in the US by Mr. & Mrs.
Davidson and owned by Raymond
Fox and Emrys Jones. Only
one entry came forward
for the Veteran class-Kazmeira
(Kazmierek x Seranata),
a lovely mare owned and
bred by Mr. & Mrs.
Tonge.
There were some gorgeous
foals in the classes, but
the Champion stole everyone's
heart. In the pouring rain,
she managed to keep her
presence with her tail
over her back. She was
the bay filly by Om el
Mareikh out of Marani owned
and bred by Talal Aggad.
Reserve was another lovely,
well grown filly Psyreesh
( Psynergy x Gretta).
There was a lovely presentation
of the WAHO trophy to Silvern
Risalm for the successful
Purebred of the year.
By the time the stallions
came in spectators were
packed in the stands or
umbrella to umbrella !!
The class for 4 to 6 year
olds was a lovely deep
class won by the exciting
bay who exuded type, presence
and great movement. He
was AJA Sanagor ( FS Bengali
x Bey Santeyna) owned and
bred by Malcolm and Jane
Hickford.
The 7 to 10 year olds
was another great class
with several highly successful
stallion vying for the
red rosette, and little
tail end to it. Another
bay stallion won this one-the
flamboyant, typey FL Sayawan
(DE) (Ibn Yathrab x Om
El Sanaya Estopa) bred
by Walter Letsch and Om
el Arab International.
The 11 to 16 years old
was also a good class.
Here the Russian bred stallion
Karat (Aromat x Kaluga)
prevailed. An exciting
stallion with great type
and topline, plus the well
known big Russian movement.
He was bred by the Tersk
Arab Stud and owned by
Mr. A Atkin.
The Straight Egyptian
stallion El Helaly (Ikhnatoon
x Enshad) won the small,
but interesting Veteran
class of stallions of 17
to 20 years. He has always
put on a good show, having
great movement and presence.
He was bred by El Zahraa
Stud and is owned by David
and Angela Angold. It was
in this class that aptly
named Poseur (Nrav x GG
Mariposa) decided to roll
in the mud !!
The final Veteran stallion
class only had two entries
and was won by Yahmur (Masjid
x Yolande) bred by Mrs.
Moss and owned by Barbara
Cary and Mrs. Thomas Everard.
So all that was left now
were the Championships.
The weather had become
worse, which is such a
shame. First were the Mare
Championships and looking
down the line, the cream
had certainly come to the
top. The Champion mare
was Love By Design GA with
Noura Reserve.
Again looking at the contenders
for the Stallion Championships,
there was a wealth from
which to choose. AJA Sanagor
got the title with Karat
Reserve.
Finally the Supreme Purebred
in Hand Championship, which
essentially was between
AJA Sanagor and Master
Design GA. The judges were
obviously split in their
decision as a referee judge
had to make the final choice.
She chose AJA Sanagor as
Champion with Master Design
Reserve.
It was a good show in
spite of the weather, and
we can all look forward
to next year to see how
the young horses have matured
and meet up with old friends.
For me attending this show
is sort of addictive after
41 years !
